   Princess Nehet wakes from a vision: her father lies dead, a lotus in his throat. She rises and runs barefoot through the palace.

   She passes the guards in mid-yawn. They do not see her. She is invisible to her own city.

   She kneels before her father at the throne. He laughs at the prophecy. The court laughs with him.

   Her brother does not laugh. He watches her with the steady gaze of someone counting days.

   The high scholar reads the omens. The stars confirm the daughter. He swears her to secrecy and writes a single sigil in his ledger.

   The high priestess is missing from the lotus shrine. Her ritual robes are folded. Her dagger is gone.

   Nehet meets the warrior-general at the desert oasis. He is loyal to her father. He needs proof.

   The court gathers around the lotus pool. The pharaoh prepares to drink. Nehet steps forward.

   Nehet drinks. Nothing happens. The court cheers. Her brother goes white. The general moves.
