   The Bride's Procession

   Duke's daughter Reni rides the funeral carriage to the underworld gate. Her sisters are crying. She is not.

   She unwraps the bouquet. Hidden inside: a silver dagger her great-grandmother used a century ago.

   The Demon Lord

   Reni meets him in the throne room. Tall, regal, calm. He extends a hand. She does not take it.

   He sees the dagger. 'Your great-grandmother left that with my predecessor. Welcome back to your family weapon.'

   The Wedding Feast

   Underworld nobility gather for the feast. They study the new bride. She studies them harder.

   A vampire countess whispers: 'Three of these nobles plan to kill your husband tonight. He knows.'

   The Library of Brides

   Reni explores the keep. She finds a library full of journals — every previous bride wrote one. Her great-grandmother wrote two.

   Her great-grandmother's second journal ends: 'I should not have used the dagger. He was the only one who loved me.'

   The Assassin

   An assassin slips into the throne room at midnight. Reni intercepts. They fight. He has the same dagger she does.

   He says: 'Your family sent me. To kill him or to kill you, depending on which side you took.'

   The Lord's Confession

   The demon lord finds Reni standing over the assassin's body. He does not ask why. He pours her wine.

   He hands her a letter signed by her father. 'He's been sending knives for a hundred years.'

   The Choice

   Reni rides to the gate. She can leave. The carriage is waiting. Her father is on the other side with arms open.

   She turns the carriage around.

   The Coronation

   Reni returns to the keep. She places the silver dagger on the demon lord's throne — point down — as her vow.

   The demon lord crowns her himself. 'You're the first one who kept the weapon for me, not from me.'
