   The Sortie Sheet

   Cadet Lin checks the morning sortie board. Seven names on the list of six. The empty slot is hers.

   Cliffhanger

   Her instructor walks past. 'You'll pilot the cut mech. From the hangar.'

   The Mech in the Hangar

   Lin meets the prototype — a 30-foot frame painted matte black. It hasn't been tested in combat. The pilot before her died in the simulator.

   The engineer says: 'It only links to one pilot. Whoever it picks first.' She steps in. It lights up.

   Class 9 Meets

   The seven cadets in the briefing room. Two of them have parents who were Class 1. None of them have ever met until today.

   The instructor flips the sheet to the war map. 'Deployment in 11 days. Two of you may not come back.'

   The Sim That Wasn't

   Class 9 runs their first joint simulation. They lose four mechs in six minutes. The mistake was real-world, not training.

   Their captain pulls them off. 'That wasn't a sim. The enemy ran a live test against you. Welcome to the war.'

   The Defector

   An older pilot — Class 1 — sneaks into the academy at night and tells Lin the truth: the war is being fought to destroy the prototype she's piloting.

   He hands her a key card. 'The control room. Tonight. Or your class dies tomorrow.'

   The Captain's Choice

   Lin's captain catches her at the control-room door. He chooses to go with her — not stop her.

   They find the file. The war-room generals ordered the prototype's destruction. The fight isn't with the enemy.

   Class 9 Mutiny

   The seven cadets decide to deploy — but not to the assigned coordinates. They go to the actual battle the generals are hiding.

   Lin's mech leads the formation. The instructor watches from the academy roof and does not raise the alarm.

   Class 9 enters the battle. Six mechs survive the first hour. The seventh — the prototype — turns the tide.
