How the season unfolds

1. S0101
   The First Loaf

   Chef Tomas pulls his first loaf from the wood oven he built. The smell carries six blocks. By noon, eleven people are at his door with nothing to trade.

   He gives them all bread. The eleventh person hands him a single grain of wheat. 'For the next batch.'

   The Doctor Arrives

   Dr. Eleanora walks in from the next town with a broken radio and a half-empty medical bag. She trades a stitched-up arm for a meal.

   She tells him the next town over has fresh water. They don't have bread.

   The Barter Map

   Tomas and the doctor map out what's left. Wheat north. Salt east. Sugar nowhere. The map is drawn in flour on the bakery floor.

   A child appears in the doorway with a sack of sugar. 'My mama said you'd know what to do with this.'

   The Old Barista

   An old barista wanders in from the south. He brings unroasted coffee beans. He hasn't roasted in seven years. His hands shake but his nose still works.

   Cliffhanger

   He sets up next to the bakery oven without asking. By morning the town has coffee for the first time in five years.

   The Bandits

   Four armed riders arrive. They want the oven. They want the wheat. They want Tomas's life if he doesn't hand over the keys.

   Tomas offers them bread instead. They eat. They sit. They stay.

   The Lighthouse

   The doctor reaches the abandoned lighthouse. The radio still works. She broadcasts a message that gets answered for the first time in years.

   The voice on the other end says: 'There's bread up the coast too. We've been waiting for you to call.'

   The Funeral

   The old barista dies in his sleep. Forty-three people come to his funeral. None of them lived in this town before the bakery opened.

   Tomas takes over the coffee station. He has watched the old man roast every morning for two years.

   A year later. The bakery is now a market. The market is now a town. Tomas pulls the first loaf at dawn.

   A child arrives with the morning's wheat sack. 'My mama said you'd know what to do with this.'
