   The Mirror

   Mei opens her eyes in a four-poster bed. The mirror shows her the face of Duchess Vivien. The script tells her this scene is page 4.

   Her lady-in-waiting curtsies. 'Your engagement ball begins in three hours, my lady.'

   The Engagement Ball

   Mei meets her fiancé Prince Edmund. In the game he breaks the engagement publicly in chapter five. Mei changes the script: she breaks it first.

   She declines him in front of the court. The court gasps. Edmund — for the first time — looks intrigued instead of relieved.

   The Library Strategy

   Mei lays out the plot in the duchy library. Seven months. Five love rivals. Twelve plot points to neutralize. She has read the walkthrough.

   She finds a footnote nobody noticed: the heroine has a route the developers never published. Vivien survives in it.

   Heroine Sophie appears at court. Pure-hearted, well-meaning, exactly as written. Mei is gracious to her. The court is confused.

   Sophie says quietly: 'Lady Vivien — you remember the rules, don't you?' Mei goes pale.

   Sophie corners Mei in the greenhouse. She is also from Mei's world. She has played the game three times. She knows Mei's secret too.

   Sophie smiles. 'I'm on the route where the heroine dies. I came here for help.'

   The annual tournament. Edmund competes. Mei sponsors a dragon knight he's never seen — and he wins.

   The hidden antagonist — the court wizard — moves to remove Mei. Sophie warns her. The wizard is not in the published game.

   Mei and Sophie team up. 'We rewrite the script together. Two villainesses are harder to kill.'
