Manhattan, 1928. A torch singer at the city's last speakeasy finds the police commissioner dead in her dressing room. The bartender is her husband. The detective is her ex.

Vera sings her closing song again. Roberto pours the bourbon. Bruno stands at the door. The mob waits at the curb.
